Why is correct writing important? Correct writing is crucial for our job because it requires someone to write business plans and daily emails. There’s nothing like a business plan full of run-on sentences or misspelled words to a shareholder or a poorly written email to your boss.
Correct writing is important also because we may be writing a weekly blog post or we may be writing the Great American Novel. Who wants to read a blog post riddled with mistakes or take on reading a novel that looks as if it was written by a fifth grader? Correct writing is consequential because, on a superficial level, people will judge us by our writing even after we cease to exist.
Everyone we meet judges us. We’re scrutinized for our command — or lack thereof — of the English language that others use to form social opinions about us.
I get judged. I’m an American living in London; living here for ten years, I haven’t picked up a regional accent. I have a competent grasp of the English language since I have an English degree and a Graduate degree in English. People still aren’t deterred from asking me where I’m from.
