I work in a hospital lab where we prepare and process bloods and swabs for COVID testing. I hear the argument nearly everyday, “if masks weren’t effective then why would doctors and surgeons wear them?”

Doctors discard their masks after examining each individual patient and the AVERAGE visit lasts 15 minutes –in the UK it’s 10 minutes. As for surgeons, firstly a surgeon with a respiratory infection or any illness in which they need to wear a mask will not be operating and secondly, their masks are changed frequently during surgery.

In order for masks to even make an impact on COVID, they have to be changed every 15 minutes. You also have to stop touching your face and constantly adjusting your mask.
