I’m an American living in London for the past five years. I think that the people of the UK are just as lonly as the Americans are.

My wife works in the NHS with the elderly and she says probably the biggest concern among the elderly is lonliness. Just over 3.5 million older people live alone and nearly 2 million of these people are over the age of 75.

Nearly 2 million of the elderly says they feel invisible. I think this is one symptom of social media but there are other factors at play also such as the changing demographics of neighborhoods; social networks; and health issues such as depression, sleep problems, impaired cognitive health, heightened vascular resistance, hypertension, psychological stress, and mental health problems.
